Optical Processors
One of the concepts that my friend gave me was about Optical Processors. Now electrons are pushed to transfer signals, what if that electron was replaced by a photon. A photon is faster than electron (Photon has the speed of light), thus the data transfer rate would be tremendous. Instead of identifying 0’s and 1’s by checking if the charge is there or not, we can determine 0’s and 1’s by checking if light (Photon) is present or not.
Advantages:
The computer would require very less electricity and would be very energy efficient as the actual transfer is due to light, electricity will be used to detect the presence of light. Not much copper would be required as use of optical fibre cables will be used for transmission of light. Overheating of processors will become history as light does not produce heat when passing through Optical Fibre Cable.
Disadvantages:
Making it will be one hell of a job, but some Indian scientists are working on it. Device can become a little sensitive as most of the cables inside will be Optical Fibres.
